چکیده

A family of ligands has been identified for the largest group of receptor protein-tyrosine kinases--the hitherto 'orphan' EPH receptor subfamily--and the functions of these receptors and ligands are starting to be elucidated.

Apoptosis: from Signalling Pathways to Therapeutic Tools

Apoptosis or programmed cell death is a gene regulated phenomenon which is important in both physiological and pathological conditions. It is characterized by distinct morphological features including chromatin condensation, cell and nuclear shrinkage, membrane blebbing and oligonucleosomal DNA fragmentation. Although, two major apoptotic pathways including 1) the death receptor (extrinsic) and...

I-34: Steroid Hormone Signalling at the FetomaternalInterface

Background: Progesterone is indispensable for differentiation of human endometrial stromal cells (HESCs) into decidual cells, a process that critically controls embryo implantation. However, HESCs also abundantly express androgen receptors (AR), yet the role of this member of the superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors in the decidual process remains poorly elucidated. Materials a...

I-7: Maternal Signalling to the Placenta

Background: Though it is well established that maternal blood-borne signals influence highly the growth of the placenta, the mechanisms are not known. In vitro trophoblast culture models are limited by an inability to reconstruct the polarised bilayer of the human hemochorial placenta. We have used a first trimester villous tissue explant system to investigate how growth factors interact with p...

Effects of Hiv/aids on Children in Swaziland: Is the Extended Family Coping?

In 2004, Swaziland recorded the highest prevalence of HIV among pregnant women in the world ever at 43%. Around 63,000 children were estimated to have lost at least a parent to AIDS by 2006 and this figure is projected to increase in future to over 80,000 by 2010. About a third of these orphans are double orphans who have lost both parents and are most cared for by grand parents who are too old...

Co-operative Cdc42 and Rho signalling mediates ephrinB-triggered endothelial cell retraction.

Cell repulsion responses to Eph receptor activation are linked to rapid actin cytoskeletal reorganizations, which in turn are partially mediated by Rho-ROCK (Rho kinase) signalling, driving actomyosin contractility. In the present study, we show that Rho alone is not sufficient for this repulsion response. Rather, Cdc42 (cell division cycle 42) and its effector MRCK (myotonic dystrophy kinase-r...
